About Sheila

Sheila Lindfield - PortraitAs a young woman, I taught art to children at various locations in the Lower Mainland, including Arts Umbrella. As a teacher, I was approached by numerous parents whose children had a wide range of difficulties, but who were flourishing in my art classes.  I was asked to provide additional services, for which I was not trained.  Those parental requests were a major impetus for me to return to university for my Master’s degree in Counselling Psychology.

I have been providing clinical counselling to adults, children and families for the past twenty years, and have been employed by three family service agencies.  For the past 8 years, I have held the position of Senior Clinical Counsellor with Westcoast Family Centres, providing counseling services to children and families and clinical supervision to front-line staff.  I have experience working with mental health issues, school and performance- based issues, as well as foster care and adoptions.  I have operated a private practice for the past 4 years, providing counselling services to individuals and families, as well as play therapy for children.

I have an adolescent son.  Parenting him has required that I integrate theoretical understandings with the ground level practicalities of raising a child, day by day.  As he developed, my appreciation for the wide variety of issues my parent-clients bring to me has radically altered.  I have acquired a new level of empathy for my clients, as I travel the privileged “inside track” of parenthood myself.

Having home-schooled our son through many of his elementary school years, I am familiar with the home-schooling community, and the diverse needs of different home-schooling families.  At the same time, I am conversant with school programs throughout the Lower Mainland, as both agency and private practice work require my input at school-based team meetings.  I am comfortable and experienced liaising with school personnel, as well as with other professionals.

For the past eight years, I have had the privilege of providing clinical supervision/consultation to other counsellors working with children and families.  I have provided these services both in agency settings and to colleagues working in private practice.  I continue to obtain regular supervision for myself, both with senior clinicians, and through a peer supervision group.

I am committed to staying physically and mentally fit, feeling strongly that my work requires this. I maintain a yoga and meditation practice, and use a bicycle for transportation whenever possible.  I hike our ever-changing coastal wilderness in most seasons, adding cross-country skiing in winter. I maintain an avid interest in gardening, which I can indulge year-round.
